Colors API

A free JSON API for color palettes and color data. No key, no signup, no rate-limit headaches for normal use. CORS is open, so you can call it directly from the browser.

GET/api/v1/palettes

List palettes, filtered by tag or search term.

Query parameters

tag: Filter to one collection, e.g. `boho`.
q: Free-text search across names and tags.
sort: `popular` (default), `trending` or `newest`.
page: Page number, starting at 1.
limit: Results per page, 1 to 50. Defaults to 20.

GET/api/v1/colors/{hex}

Full detail for a single color, including shades and contrast.

Query parameters

hex: Six or three digit hex code, with or without the leading hash.

Response shape

List endpoints return a `data` array and a `meta` object with pagination. Single-resource endpoints return the object directly. Errors return an `error` string with the appropriate status code.

Colors API FAQ

Do I need an API key?

No. Both endpoints are open, require no registration, and send permissive CORS headers so you can call them straight from a browser.

What are the rate limits?

Around 120 requests per minute per IP. Responses are cached at the edge for an hour, so a normal application will rarely come close to the limit.

Can I use the API commercially?

Yes, free of charge. A link back to www.ai-color.app is appreciated but not required. Colors themselves are not copyrightable, and the palette data is released for unrestricted use.

Is there a rate-limited or paid tier?

Not currently. If you need volumes beyond the public limit, get in touch and we will work something out.
