Why truly random colors are usually unusable
If you pick three bytes at random you get a uniform distribution across RGB space, and the majority of that space is occupied by muddy, very dark or very washed-out values. Roughly speaking, the colors people actually want live in a fairly narrow band of medium saturation and medium lightness, which is a small fraction of the total volume.
This generator therefore samples hue uniformly but constrains saturation and lightness to that usable band. You still get genuine variety across the wheel, but you are not spending ten presses skipping past near-blacks.
Using randomness deliberately
Random colors are most useful as a circuit breaker. Designers converge on the same hue ranges very quickly, and a random starting point forces you out of a habit you may not have noticed you had.
The productive workflow is to shuffle until something surprises you, then stop being random. Take that hex into the palette generator and build a proper harmony around it, and check the result against your background in the contrast checker before you commit.
Random Color Generator FAQ
How does the random color generator work?
Each press picks a random hue across the full wheel, then constrains saturation and lightness to the ranges that produce usable colors. Fully unconstrained randomness returns a lot of near-black and near-white values that are useless in practice.
Can I generate a random color with the keyboard?
Yes. Press the spacebar anywhere on the page to get a new color without reaching for the mouse.
What is a random hex color?
A hex color is a six-digit code where each pair of digits sets the red, green and blue channel from 00 to FF. There are 16,777,216 possible combinations, which is why the generator effectively never repeats.
How do I turn a random color into a full palette?
Use the link below the swatch to open the palette generator with that hex already set as the anchor. It will build four coordinated colors around it using a real harmony rule rather than more randomness.
